Hey,
I know today’s Friday and I should be posting a poem or short story but I have something I need to get off my chest.
Over the past several weeks, I’ve learned some things about my coworkers. I actually tweeted about this the other day but it’s been bothering me for a long time.
My coworkers use slurs and derogatory words like they’re meaningless.
There are no black people here and yet there are people that think it’s okay to use the N-word.
There are people who still say f*g and use gay as an insult.
There are people who use r*tard like it’s okay.
It’s 2018. How have people not grasped that words have power. They leave an impact and it’s hurtful.
I don’t get it. I really don’t.
How are there people who are still so un self-aware of the things they say.
It freaks me out and I feel so uncomfortable.
I’ve actually been able to talk to a couple of my coworkers and asked them not to use that language, at least around me. Some of them are more receptive and are being more respectful, which I appreciate. But I don’t want to have to talk to adults who should already know how to be decent people. That’s not my responsibility. On top of that, it’s exhausting.
But, I am determined to make some kind of difference. Even if it’s a small one.
Until next time x
